POCUS Plus 34
Thirty-four pediatric point-of-care ultrasound topics, in sequence — from airway to arrest to fracture, including ultrasound-guided vascular access.
Introduction — 34 Applications in Pediatric POCUS
Point-of-care ultrasound has moved from an adjunct to an integral bedside tool across pediatric emergency and critical care — extending the physical exam in real time for airway, vascular access, cardiopulmonary, abdominal, genitourinary, neurological, and musculoskeletal assessment, and now the resuscitation itself. The 34 topics in this sequence span the applications with the most established or emerging evidence base in pediatric practice, organised by clinical domain rather than by frequency of use:
Intubation confirmation, lung recruitment, USG-guided vascular access (topic 34)
BLUE protocol, pneumothorax, pleural effusion, pneumonia/consolidation
RUSH protocol, CLUE, IVC assessment, tamponade, 4-view echo
Traditional FAST, E-FAST
Abscess vs cellulitis, peritonsillar/retropharyngeal abscess, vocal cord assessment
ONSD, transcranial Doppler (raised ICT, sickle cell), cranial ultrasound
Appendicitis, intussusception, pyloric stenosis, pneumoperitoneum, portal venous gas
Gallstones, bladder volume, hydronephrosis, testicular torsion
Hip effusion, fracture
POCUS during CPR, diaphragm excursion
Evidence quality and clinical adoption vary by application — some (FAST, IVC assessment, ONSD) are supported by extensive pediatric literature, while others are more recently described or extrapolated from adult data. Use alongside your institutional POCUS credentialing pathway and clinical judgement, not as a substitute for either.
